On the 7th of October the first round of the John Murphy Cup Under 19 soccer took place. It was a wet and gloomy morning but we were playing at home and after a good warm up the team was ready for action.
The first half had been evenly matched as both teams had equal shares of possession until Clonmel made a sudden attack with a spectacular finish, scored the first goal. Almost immediately we responded with a great goal by Jamie Malone burying it in the top corner a few minutes before half time leaving the score at 1-1 at the break.
After a few tips and pointers from the team coach, Mr.Clancy and team captain Thomas Childs, the team got really stuck into the game. Ten minutes after the restart, Clonmel got an opportunity and took it. This really dampened the team’s spirit, the atmosphere was tense and fiery.
Almost immediately after Clonmel’s goal Darragh Burke got another goal for Ailbe’s, but it did no good. The final score was 5-2 to Clonmel.
Mr. Clancy quoted ‘A good team performance, unlucky on the day and ran out of steam in the last ten minutes’.
Our next match in the tournament is scheduled for the 21st of October.
