On the 2nd of December our U16 Girls Basketball Team played their South-East Regional semi-final match against Tullow, Co. Carlow in our new Sports Hall. It was a great bonus to have home advantage in this crucial game.
St. Ailbe’s got off to a great start with 4 points by Sarah Halligan, 2 points by Aisling O’Gorman and 2 points by Zoey Morrissey. At the end of the first quarter the score was 8 – 0.
Our team for the second quarter was Grainne Hayes, Rachel Ryan, Aoife O’Biren, Sinead White and Clodagh Cummins. They got off to a good start with 2 points by Grainne and 2 points by Clodagh.
After reaching the 5 fowl limit Sinead White was consigned to the side line giving Tullow 2 free shots, scoring one of them. Ceileidh Hennesy came on instead and she scored 2 points.
After the second half the score now lies at 14 points to 1.
In the third quarter energy levels were running low and we failed to score. The team stayed the same with Lauren, Aishling, Blaithnaid, Katie and Amy on for the last quarter. Tullow came fighting back with 12 points with Blathnaid adding 2 points to our tally.
The final score was 16 points to 13, a great win to book our place in the final
Ms. Casey said “They worked very hard to get here and both teams played very well”.
St. Ailbe’s U16 girls are now in the South East Regional Final which will take place on the 10th of December in Waterford. Best of luck to the girls.
